New partnership could be ‘significant step’ to finding more sustainable feeds for aquaculture industry
Skretting, the world’s largest producer of feeds for farmed fish, is collaborating with biotechnology company Zooca Calanus to develop a copepod-based feed tailored for the aquaculture industry. This new partnership aims to provide “innovative and sustainable nutritional solutions” by leveraging Zooca Calanus’ expertise in harvesting and processing Calanus finmarchicus, a tiny marine copepod rich in essential nutrients.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to the aquaculture industry,” said Hassan Skøien, shrimp innovation director at Skretting. “By combining Skretting’s expertise in aquafeed formulation with Zooca Calanus’ unique marine ingredients, we aim to set new standards for nutrition, health and sustainability in aquaculture.”
It’s anticipated that this could enhance the health and growth of farmed aquatic species while promoting more sustainable practices within the aquaculture sector. Skretting and Zooca Calanus plan to introduce these innovative products to the market and “making a lasting impact on the global aquaculture landscape.”
“Calanus is an abundant resource,” said Eamonn O’Brien, a global product manager at Skretting. “Incorporating it into our diets allows us to diversify marine ingredients and provides employment opportunities for local fishing communities during their low season.”
