The aquaculture industry in Brazil is moving toward further expansion with the support of the federal government. A key strategy of the More Fishing and Aquaculture plan is the development of aquaculture in federal waters. The plan promotes sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture by linking those involved and consolidating state policies addressing social inclusion, security and food sovereignty. Tilapia is the main farmed fish, although tambaqui and others have potential for large-scale production due to their wide acceptance by consumers.

Parasitism enhances tilapia susceptibility to Flavobacterium columnare

The bacterium Flavobacterium columnare and parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich) are common pathogens that can cause heavy economic losses for fish culture. The authors conducted a study to evaluate the susceptibility of hybrid tilapia to F. columnare, including fish mortality and bacterial numbers in fish after parasitism by Ich.

The introduction of tilapia to irrigation reservoirs in Israel improved the efficiency of water usage and reduced the cost of water needed for tilapia culture. Although requiring considerable investment, many dual-use reservoirs were constructed and equipped for efficient harvesting.
