Aquaculture Exchange: Daniel Benetti
University of Miami professor says the U.S. seafood marketplace needs to embrace 'plate-sized' fish if a domestic aquaculture industry is to become sustainable and profitable.
Fisheries
Developing alternative sources of information could help determine the status of snapper and grouper fisheries, as well as other data-limited fisheries.

University of Miami professor says the U.S. seafood marketplace needs to embrace 'plate-sized' fish if a domestic aquaculture industry is to become sustainable and profitable.
Aquafeeds
A growth trial using hatchery-reared grouper was carried out to study the effects of stocking density on feed intake and subsequent growth. Contrary to common perceptions, fish stocked at the highest density had higher feed intake and body weights.
Aquafeeds
Although groupers present desirable traits as an aquaculture species, the high cost of feed for the carnivorous fish limits expansion of grouper culture. The author performed two trials to evaluate the performance of tiger grouper juveniles fed soybean meal-based feeds.
Innovation & Investment
A collaboration among the Center for Aquaculture Research in Colombia, Center for Research, Education and Recreation, and University of Miami is working to adapt the latest aquaculture technology available worldwide to local conditions and create opportunities for farming new commercial species in Colombia.
Intelligence
A new venture under development in the Bahamas will capitalize on Tropic Seafood’s established logistics and infrastructure to diversify its operations from processing and selling wild fisheries products to include the culture of grouper and other marine fish.
Health & Welfare
In targeting grouper for new and sustainable farming technology, the authors developed an oral vaccine to control nervous necrosis virus (NNV) infection at the larval stage and multivalent injective bacterial and viral vaccines for the grow-out stage.
Health & Welfare
Researchers at the Gondol Research Institute for Mariculture in Indonesia have studied the artificial propagation of groupers since 1995. In 2001, GRIM began successfully producing grouper seedstock at commercial-scale levels.
Health & Welfare
Using a series of equations, energy and protein requirements for every fish species can be calculated and adapted to changing conditions.
