Responsibility education program launched for Ecuador’s shrimp farming sector

New program aims to enhance sustainability in Ecuador’s shrimp farming industry through targeted education and training

The Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) and the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA) have launched SustainED, an educational initiative to promote sustainable development in Ecuador’s shrimp farming industry. The program provides training on sustainability principles, addressing social, environmental, economic and quality-related challenges.

“The concept of sustainability is constantly evolving,” said José Antonio Camposano, CNA executive president. “Ecuador’s shrimp industry has always adapted rapidly to change, so it was essential to create a dynamic platform that could match this responsiveness.

“Education is key to raising awareness and fostering better practices within the industry,” said Pamela Nath, SSP director. “SustainED aims to transform producers into more environmentally conscious and responsible actors, while educating consumers on the benefits of the product they are purchasing.”

SustainED fosters sustainable practices through workshops, field activities and social media. Its inaugural event in Guayaquil gathered over 120 professionals for training on metabisulfite regulations, use and analysis, organized with SSP members BASF and BIOLAN.

“With SustainED, SSP and the CNA have established a lifelong learning model that connects the industry with experts from various fields, allowing us to understand issues, define them and find solutions together, or learn from those already being implemented,” said Camposano.
