Ocean Experts Fisheries LLC is First Plant in Oman Certified to GSA’s Seafood Processing Standard
Ocean Experts Fisheries LLC based in Oman has achieved certification to the Seafood Processing Standard (SPS), the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) has announced.
Ocean Experts Fisheries is a leading fish processing company committed to delivering high-quality seafood products to customers worldwide. The company specializes in processing Mahi-Mahi, sardines, swordfish and tuna, and their products include fresh and frozen fillets, value-added seafood products as well as customized products for specific markets. Their mission is to provide prime quality seafood products while promoting responsible fishing practices, sustainable sourcing and maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
Processing plants that handle farmed and/or wild seafood can pursue certification to the Seafood Processing Standard, which is the only seafood-specific processing plant standard and covers environmental responsibility, social accountability, food safety and traceability.
“We applaud Ocean Experts Fisheries for becoming the first processor in Oman to attain certification to the Seafood Processing Standard,” said Iain Shone, Director of Market Development in Europe. “This underscores their commitment to responsible practices and their dedication to environmental responsibility, social accountability and food safety.”
The certification was sponsored by Envisible, a company specializing in sustainable sourcing. Envisible uses the Wholechain traceability system to collect verifiable traceability data on all its seafood from source to point of sale. Consumers are then able to scan a QR code on packaging to learn about Ocean Experts Fisheries. Together, the organizations are working with Ocean Experts Fisheries to provide responsibly sourced seafood to major U.S. retailers starting with Topco Associates’ Full Circle Market, and Giant Eagle’s Nature’s Basket, private label brands.
“We are thrilled to sponsor Ocean Experts Fisheries’ Seafood Processing Standard certification as a means to enable small-scale, artisanal fishers with more equitable access to market,” said Mark Kaplan, Co-Founder and CEO of Envisible. “Small scale fishers, farmers and processors are often the primary producers of the seafood we consume. Due to the cost and complexity of market requirements, they are often excluded from the market and therefore inequitably compensated. We hope this model scales as it enables more inclusive growth with greater transparency across the seafood industry.”
