GAA Founding Member Ken Morrison Passes

With the Jan. 6 death of Kenneth Morrison, the Global Aquaculture Alliance lost a great aquaculture pioneer and one of its greatest supporters.
Morrison received the first Global Aquaculture Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 for his many enduring contributions to food and seafood production. As founding and governing members, his companies helped establish GAA and have continued to support its expansion for 17 years.
The multifaceted entrepreneur was known for his keen intuition and willingness to take bold, innovative steps. During his long career, the 93-year-old Morrison developed large-scale businesses involving grains, hogs, cattle, fishmeal and fishing in North America, South America and Asia.
He pioneered developments in shrimp aquaculture that included the first large-scale shrimp hatchery and feed mill in Ecuador, mechanical harvesting and distribution of feed by airplane. His innovations and facilities were models of environmental sustainability, biosecurity and efficiency.
“Mr. Morrison was remarkably successful in a wide range of businesses,” said George Chamberlain, GAA president and business partner of Morrison. “While he had a commanding presence in business, his guiding principle was fairness. In person, he was humble, adventurous and generous.”
As summarized in his obituary: “Business was his whole life, and many people benefited from his success.”
A memorial service for Morrison was scheduled for January 9 in Hastings, Nebraska, USA, home base for Morrison Enterprises’ many international ventures. Memorials may be given to a charity of your choice. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com.
