The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program’s “Spotlight Stories” highlight BAP-certified facilities around the world and the stories of the people behind them. This Spotlight Story features Goh Soo Chin, Marketing Director of GST Group. GST Group, based in Malaysia, has developed a fully integrated seafood production ecosystem, from broodstock and hatchery to farming, feed mill, processing and distribution.
What inspired you to become involved in the seafood industry?
Inheriting a deep-rooted family legacy in the seafood industry has been the primary inspiration for my involvement. Growing up surrounded by the passion and commitment of my family members, I naturally developed a profound connection to aquaculture, setting the foundation for my journey in this dynamic field.
Tell us a little about your company. History, species farmed, etc.
GST Group, established in 1985, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a small family-based seafood trading venture to a globally recognized corporate. Our operations now span six offshore and onshore fish farms, processing an impressive 4,000 tons of seafood annually. We take pride in farming diverse species, including Barramundi, Red Snapper, John Snapper, Pomfret, Tiger Prawn and others. Our comprehensive facilities cover every aspect of the fishery chain, from broodstock and hatchery to farming, feedmill, processing, and distribution ensuring every catch comes with a trace.
How is your company involved in the local community?
In terms of our community involvement, GST Group actively engages with the local community and NGOs by organizing educational roadshows at retail stores. These events are dedicated to promoting awareness of sustainable and BAP-certified seafood. In Malaysia, where awareness is lacking, we strive to educate consumers about the importance of making responsible seafood choices.
Why did your company choose to become BAP certified? How has it improved your business?
Choosing to become BAP certified was a strategic decision aligned with our corporate core values of championing sustainable seafood. This certification not only reinforces our commitment to responsible aquaculture but also enhances our brand image. It has become a badge of honor for us, signaling to consumers that we adhere to the highest standards in the industry.
Why do you love working in aquaculture?
Working in aquaculture is a labor of love for me. As someone who enjoys consuming fish and seafood, being a part of this industry allows me to contribute to its growth while fulfilling a personal passion. At home, I even find joy in feeding fish, making my connection to aquaculture both professional and personal.
