Canada’s First Full-Line Seafood Distributor Attains BAP Certification

July, 2013

Albion Fisheries Ltd., Western Canada’s largest seafood distributor, is the latest processing facility to earn Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification, the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) announced in mid-July.

albionfisheries_logoAlbion’s 65,000-square-foot processing plant in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, attained BAP certification on July 12, becoming the first full-line seafood distributor in Canada to earn this distinction. The company processes a variety of seafood products at its facility, including Atlantic salmon.

“Albion is focused on continuous improvement, and BAP is another step in this very important journey,” said John K. Milobar, president of Albion Fisheries. “It allows our customers to feel confident that we have followed an audited protocol regarding food safety and traceability and should provide comfort in knowing their product has met all of the BAP standards.”

Albion’s seafood products are sold primarily to retail and foodservice customers in British Columbia and Alberta. The company handles almost 2,000 SKUs of finfish and bivalve products. In addition to Atlantic salmon, it produces hand-peeled shrimp meat and crabmeat and is a secondary processor of Pacific salmon, halibut, sablefish and other species.

About BAP
Best Aquaculture Practices is an international certification program based on achievable, science-based and continuously improved performance standards for the entire aquaculture supply chain — farms, hatcheries, processing plants and feed mills — that assure healthful foods produced through environmentally and socially responsible means. BAP certification is based on independent audits that evaluate compliance with the BAP standards developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance.
